Ted Ferry was a lifelong Ketchikan resident who graduated from Ketchikan High School in 1940, studied at Wilson Business College and the University of Washington, and served as a U.S. Coast Guardsman from 1942-1947. In 1947, Ted took over the proprietorship of Ferry’s Food Store and Ferry’s Apartments. Ted and Ramona Ferry were married in 1956.
Throughout his life Ted participated in many civic and community organizations that included the Ketchikan City Council, Ketchikan Utility and Advisory Board, City Charter Commission, NWPPA, Southeast Conference, Ketchikan Recreation Council, Ketchikan Rockets Basketball team, and founded the Alaska Officials Association.
As a businessman and civic leader Ted saw the need for such a facility as the Civic Center. The Ketchikan City Council chose to honor Ted by naming the facility after him to show sincere appreciation for his community service and dedication.
The Ted Ferry Civic Center is a multi-purpose public facility intended to encourage a balance of uses to meet the economic, social, cultural, and convention needs of the Ketchikan community.
